Darkness Upon the Face of the Deep

Program Notes:

I wrote this piece for my sister, Natasha, for her piano recital themed around "night." With that idea as inspiration, I thought of the Genesis account of the world just after it was created. "The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit ofGod moved upon the face of the waters" (Genesis 1:2, ESV). In this piece, I tried to capture the mysterious aspect of the Spirit of God and the darkness, as well as the movement of the Spirit. Though it does not follow the tradition of "Art Music" quite as strictly as most of my other works, I still enjoy it five years later, and I hope pianists will as well.
